Born on this day in 1528 in Verona was painter of Venetian school Paolo Veronese. Many paintings by Veronese from the Hermitage collection are on display in the Small Italian Skylight Room in the New Hermitage and in the Hall of the 16th-century Venetian school in the Great (Old) Hermitage. Towards the end of his life Veronese turned to tragic subjects. The artist created composition 'The Lamentation' for the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Just three figures are present here: the Virgin Mary and the Angel bend over the body of Christ.
